Abstract

The mask, as old as the history of mankind, has manifested itself in every phase of the theater and has evolved with it. On its way from primitive ceremonies to the stage, the mask was used as a means of persuasion. Masks in ancient Greek and Roman theater reached their peak with the commedia dell'arte, and their use declined as theater moved closer to reality and naturalistic understanding. With the need for change at the beginning of the twentieth century, theater developed counter-forms. With these changes, the theater returned to the basics and principles and brought the mask back to the stage. This time, the mask was used in contemporary theater not only as a means of demonstration but also as an educational tool. This study explores the purpose of the use of the mask by looking at its history and then examining the reasons for its occasional use. Another theme of the study is the reuse of masks in contemporary theater. Here, the purposes and reasons for the reuse of masks and examples of their use in contemporary theater are examined. Starting from Artaud to Lecoq, the study examines how the mask is used, what it teaches the player pedagogically, and how it is used in performance.
