Abstract

The concept of children's literature have been proposed for the first time in Egypt at the beginning of the 1900s. In this period leading poets such as Rıfâ'a et-Jahtâvî, Muhammed 'Uşmân Celâl, Ahmed Şevkî, İbrâhîm el-'Arâb, Muhammed el-Herâvî have written the stories in verse (fables) for children. But the vast majority of them were translation or adaptation. In the 1930s, unlike the earlier poets Kâmil Kîlâni written poems and stories for children and has been recognized as true leader of Arab Children's Literature. After Kîlâni, the concept of children's literature spread to the whole Arab world and appeared many writers and poets who worked in this field. The aim of our study, in parallel with developments in Egypt, the beginning and development of children's literature is to show other North African Arab countries.
