Abstract

Historical buildings are structures that reflect the socio-economic situation of the period they were built, create a bridge between the past and present of the society in which they are located, and describe the values and culture they have. Industrial structures, which are one of the types of structures examined within the concept of a historical building; began to be seen after the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Industry structures that emerged with a focus on a specific production and function; bear the traces of the place they belong and the sociological, cultural, and technological structure of the society at that time. Protection of industrial structures is important in transmitting these traces to future generations. One of the preferred methods of protection is refunctioning. Refunctionalization is a necessary practice in order to provide the physical-cultural continuity of historical industrial buildings and environments. At this point, one of the preferred design strategies is parasitic architecture. Within the scope of this study, Santral Istanbul and Müze Gazhane structures, which are examples of industrial structures refunctionalized as museums in Turkey, were examined using the Causal Comparison method. As a result of the examinations, it has been concluded that the structures seen in Santral Istanbul do not cause “parasitic”, but the practices carried out in Müze Gazhane create parasitic and occupy the Gazhane complex.
