Abstract

The aim of the study is to make evaluations about the chronological development of the tuluat theater in a historical perspective. In the literature on Tuluat theater, it has been focused on how it emerged and why it became widespread. Unlike the literature on the topic, the study seeks the answer to the question of why famous tuluatists are also famous middle players. While seeking the answer to this question, the political developments of the period are also included. While seeking answer to this question, the political developments of the period are included in the introduction. Because it is possible to say that political preferences affect this situation even though oral culture is effective in periods when there is no written culture in Turkey. The traditional and modern distinction in Turkish theater writing is actually the product of political preferences. With the declaration of the Tanzimat Fermanı in 1839, the reflection of the modernization process on the social sphere caused the pre- Tanzimat entertainment concept to be traditionally expressed. Until the Tanzimat period, the people living next to the palace, in the cities and in the countryside, had fun with village theatrical plays and folk theaters. The change in the understanding of entertainment first showed itself in the palace. Sultan Abdulmecit, who declared the Tanzimat, included the representations of European companies in the palace. However, these companies did not limit themselves to the palace, and their performances in Istanbul inevitably changed the tastes of the masses. One of the reasons why the people of Istanbul are interested in modern theater is the reflection of the aesthetic understanding in Western theater. Because modern theater is different from traditional. The fact that it is played on a certain stage by professional artists, shows the European lifestyle, and has costumes and decor explains this situation. The change in the tastes of not only the palace but also the people with the westernization process has affected the traditional Turkish theater. At a time when the written culture was not yet formed, the modern theater, which is based on the written text, with the stage and professional actors, started to form in Turkey with the Tanzimat period, under the influence of Westernization and foreign theater companies. Thus, in the period from the Tanzimat to the Constitutional Monarchy, the opening of the stages in Turkish theater, the emergence of theatrical literature, and the transition to professional acting took place. However, the destruction of the Gedikpaşa theater as a result of a political choice interrupted the development of modern Turkish theater. The theater, which was called tuluat until the Second Constitutional Period, became popular in Istanbul and the provinces. Just like in modern theater, there is stage, decor and text in tuluat theater. However, although the tuluat theater contains modern elements, it did not break away from the traditional folk theater, especially the “ortaoyunu”. Because those who perform tuluat plays during and after the Constitutional Monarchy are the “ortaoyunu” actors. For this reason, in the second part of the research, information was given about the middle play and the famous middle players of the period; similar and different aspects between the tuluat theater and the middle play have been revealed. Again, in this section, examples of tuluat theater and a memoir about how a tuluat play was played are given. Thus, this paper is an attempt to determine which aspects of traditional and modern theater the tuluat theater took. In the last part of the study, the results of the research prepared by making use of the narratives of the period, the studies of modern researchers, partially archive documents and periodicals were evaluated. What makes this research important is that it gives new information to the information given in the literature about the prevalence of tuluat.
