Abstract

Maritime transport accounts for more than 80% of world trade by volume and more than 70% by value. Containers, on the other hand, have gradually increased their position in the world maritime trade since they were designed. In 2019, a total of 795.94 million TEU containers were handled at worldwide container ports. Empty container movements, mainly caused by trade imbalances, are an important phenomenon in container transportation, an ongoing problem since the beginning of container transportation and will continue to be a key issue in the future. The cancellation of flights during the Covid-19 outbreak prevented the repositioning of empty containers and increased the imbalance between supply and demand for containers. In this study, the causes of empty container movements were examined by literature research, and the effect of the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 epidemic on empty container movements was examined. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of the Covid-19 epidemic on empty container movements with the data obtained from the statistical data pool of the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs. When the data obtained were examined, it was seen that the import/export gap for 2020 increased compared to previous years, and it was concluded that the increasing difference triggered the empty container movement by creating a trade imbalance.
