Abstract
In the early modern philosophy, the spiritual substance is a opinion defended by thephilosophers such as Leibniz and Malebranche who reluctantly confirme the existance of thematerial world, as well as by the dualist philosophers like Descartes and the immaterialistphilosophers like Berkeley. The supposition of spiritual substratum, which existe beside thephysical-material substance, but wich is considered fundamentally different from its nature, inthe eyes of dualists; which is the support of the so-called “physical” phenomena according toLeibniz and Malebranche, has found many supporters as it conforms to the doctrin ofChristianity. Thus, the spiritual substance, which has the abilities like thinking, feeling, and will, and is non-extended, is glorified and blessed against the extended material substance lackingthese abilities. This opinion, as in different periods of the history of thought, provided a criticalstarting point for own anti-thesis, and a group of Early Modern Age philosophers, who defendedthat the unique substance was material, appeared to the stage of history. A century after piousmaterialists such as Hobbes and Locke, many philosophers will take a materialist and atheiststance during the Enlightenment, arguing that religious dogmas are an obstacle to the humanmind. In our article, we examined the objection of De La Mettrie, the pioneer of philosophers socalled “French materialists”, to spiritual substance. De La Mettrie argues that the term “soul” isan empty term for which we have no idea. According to him, all the abilities attributed to this socalled "soul" used to mean the thinking part of us are actually subject to the organization of thebrain and the body. Therefore, the sensuous being is ultimately an organized matter, contrary towhat the dualists and spiritualist monists argued. Thus, the matter is the only exsiting substancefor De La Mettrie.
