Abstract

This essay attempts to conceive political violence along a line with an alternative conceptual repertoire and feeds from a historical-sociological framework. By combining Christian Gerlach s extremely violent societies and Charles Tilly s state coercion analy- sis, the essay discusses the impacts of political violence repertoires on the historical course from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic. The sequence of effect in question has been examined within the context of the annihilation of the Ottoman Armenians and Kurdish problem of the Republic. The central argument of the essay is that without understanding how vertical and horizontal violence mechanisms were employed, it is unlikely to grasp peculiar dynamics of Turkish politics.
