Abstract
Füruzan s novel 47 liler (Generation of 47) has so far been considered a12 March novel . Yet, in addition to narrating the story of the generationof 47, it portrays the pains of Turkey s societal transformation. The socialstructure before and after the foundation of the modern Republic shapesthe generation in discussion; however, this social structure remains in thebackground of the work. The historical interconnectedness of the variousgenerations requires an analysis that incorporates multiple perspectives. This study is thus a re-reading of 47 liler as a portrait of Turkey smodernisation. The novel emerges as a narrative of a woman writer, as the suggestedtransformation is portrayed particularly through female characters, such asLeylim nine, Nüveyre and Emine, and their relation to their geographicaland physical settings. The emigration of Leylim nine from Kars to Erzurum;Nüveyre s move from the traditional village house to the modern flat in thetown centre, and from there to the capital city and Emine s search for heridentity in the political and intellectual environment of Istanbul emphasisethe socio-political transformation of Turkey through the experiences ofthree generations. Accordingly, the portrayal of Turkey s modernisationsupplements the depiction of the 12 March period in 47 liler. The historicalanalysis that is employed in this article responds to the shortcomings ofconsidering the novel merely as a 12 March text. This study, which is a part of the TÜBİTAK funded Women s Literaturein Turkey and Analytical Examination of the Profile of Women Writers(KAYAPRO) project, aims to underline the importance of introducing newperspectives to the analyses of the period s novels in general, as well as47 liler in particular through its theoretical framework and analyticalapproach.
