Abstract
The Islamic theology was born into an atmosphere where there was a considerable amount of philosophical developments and different religious thoughts. Its emergence was also parallel with the intense political conflicts, civil wars, and caliphate debates. Thus, the theological debates should be examined in relation to those political developments. In this study, the Muʿtazilī school of theology will be discussed by addressing these questions: How and under what conditions the school emerged, what types of reaction the Muʿtazilī theologians made to those circumstances, and what kinds of slogans they made in their theological system. More specifically, this paper will discuss the Muʻtazilī reactions to the allegation that the atoms are indivisible, which was transferred through philosophical texts in Greek. Furthermore, it will focus on the question how the Zoroastrian dualism and the trinitarian theology of Christianity attracted the reaction of the Muʿtazilā and what sorts of apologetical oppositions the school made. These problems would not be covered if it was examined only within the context of belief. For this purpose, the Muʿtazilī account of tawḥīd, one of the five principles of the Muʿtazilā, will be revisited in relation to the school’s response to those religions.
