Abstract

The Izmit Bay, as well as its geographic location to have Turkey's most important industrial areas in the logistics sector has a very important potential. The Bay is located between the cities of Istanbul and Kocaeli in terms of geographical location and constitutes the east of Marmara Sea. Due to the fact that industrial investments are intertwined with urban areas, environmental pollution caused by intensive industry, recent growth of shipbuilding industry and negative pressure of filling requirements on coastal areas and ecosystems and the presence of Petro-Chemical facilities in Izmit Gulf which has 35 port-pier and many industrial facilities installed around it, is at risk as a result of intensive industrialization and 12.000-15.000 ship traffic annually. Although being economically important, environmental pollution is noticeable. The fact that the Bay point is in the first degree earthquake zone and the presence of large active faults triggers this risk. The 1999 earthquake and its consequences are the most important indicators of this. The aim of this review paper is to find out the effects of changes in domestic or industrial inputs and other environmental pressures on the Bay waters’ quality and ecosystem and to determine the measures to be taken and to set an example for the studies that will be carried out in the future. It is important that to present the Bay’s pollution assessments and develop strategies and policies regarding the measures to be taken.
