Abstract
By analyzing the decay of coda wave amplitude, we have determined coda Q, $Q_c$ in the Westren Anatolia (Turkey). Using the Single Isotropic Scattering Model, we analyzed 116 earthquakes which were registered at the GEBZE station, by using five narrow frequency bands centered at 1.5, 3, 6, 8, and 10 Hz. Coda Q values were obtained using different lapse times, between 30 to 190 seconds, in steps of 10 seconds. It is found the coda $Q_c$ for Western Anatolia varies with frequency and lapse time. For a lapse time of 30 seconds, the frequency dependence of $Q_c$ is $Q_c$ (f)=50.7 $f^{1.01}$ and for a lapse time of 190 seconds, it is $Q_c$(f)= 183.2 $f^{0.76}$. In this region, the exponential value of the $Q_c$ frequency dependence is practically constant, between 0.7 and 1.0. The obtained coda $Q_c$ values were consistent with other $Q_c$ values estimations for in different regions of the world. To investigate the attenuation better, the whole area were divided into the four small regions. In spite of one station in Gebze, it has been tried to determine attenuative characteristics of different regions. Therefore, there was a chance to indicate and compare the regions that represent more attenuative crust than others. The $Q_c$ determinations from the earthquakes which occurred in region-III around Izmir-Ankara ophiolitic zone (39.00°-30.50°N, 28.00°-29.00°E) represent higher attenuation structure than others. In the area-IV, $Q_c$ values have not indicated regular increase with lapse time and showed strong differences with depth. This could be interpreted as a presence of a low velocity layer in the crust.
