Abstract

The acceleration and displacement spectra of small earthquakes detected by BURSA SM2 NETWORK (BUSNET) are studied to infer source parameters. The network consists of 5 acceleration seismographs deployed in around Bursa city. The acceleration recorders were installed mainly on the sites where thick Permian limestone and thick Neogene formations exposed. Threecomponent digital accelerograms obtained for 40 earthquakes at epicentral distances less than 100 km were analyzed. SH acceleration and displacement spectra were examined to infer source parameters such as source size, seismic moment and stress drop, and to determine the existence of the cutoff frequency $F_max$ beyond which the spectral amplitudes decay sharply. The validity of $f_0$ and $F_max$ were tested on the acceleration and displacement spectra. The effect of various $Q_s$ models on the source spectra is also discussed. The earthquakes used in this study arc located for a layered crustal structure. SH acceleration seisimograms were integrated twice to get the displacement records. The resulting time series were multiplied by 10 percent cosine window and FFT was applied to calculate the spectra. I found that the appearance of the most of the source spectra depart from Brune's source model which predicts simple source spectrum. Signature of $F_max$ phenomena of which the origin and the physical mechanism is controversy, is observed from the acceleration spectra. It is shown that the corner frequency $f_0$ can be determined from the acceleration record without converting the signal to displacement record. 1 could not observe clear evidences of site and source effects on the $F_max$ parameter. The equations between kinemattic and dynamic source parameters are determined.
