Abstract

Airports built on sea fill or reclaimed land are quite sensitive to the fact that the settlements occur due to the weight of the structure, and when the clay is used as filling material, the clay swells over time and lifts the structure. In addition, soil liquefaction in filled lands makes the structure even more sensitive to tectonic movements. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series methods, developed for determining the movements that occur over time, can determine the mm scale deformations depending on the spatial resolution of the satellite image used. For this purpose, the deformation analysis of Istanbul Airport, which was built on reclaimed wetlands area, between the years November 2018 that airport was put into operation and November 2021 using the Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) method. In the study, 186 Sentinel-1 SAR images in ascending orbit direction provided free of charge by the European Space Agency were used. In addition, 85 satellite images were used in the analysis carried out between July 2020 and November 2021 for the runway C which was put into operation in July 2020. According to the obtained results, settlement movement was detected in the satellite line of sight (LOS) direction in the northern parts of the airport, while the uplift movement was detected in the southern parts. Determination of up to 20 mm settlement movements around the area where 73 ha of wetland was reclaimed shows that the reclaimed areas were more sensitive to the movements in the airport. The obtained results can be used as a guide for the establishment of both terrestrial and satellite-based continuous monitoring systems, especially in airports built on filled areas.
