Abstract

The Cretan Uprising of 1866 was one of the serious problems of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Greece makes every kind of fiscal and military assistance to the rebellious Cretans according with the philosophy of Megali Idea. The Ottoman Empire could not have achieved to put an end the rebellion because of this assistance coming from Morea. The Sublime Porte carries out a very effective diplomatic measure through the ends of 1868 to cut down the Greek assistance. The ultimatum of the Sublime Porte, has resulted in a deep crisis between the Ottoman Empire and Greece. After the interference of the European powers the meeting of a conference in which the problem will be discussed is decided. Paris Conference of 1869 ends with the brilliant victory of the Ottoman Empire. The method followed through this crisis proves the maturity of the Ottoman diplomacy in 19th century. It also proves that the Ottoman Empire is still alive enough to draw the policy in 19th century.
