Târîh-i Sultân Selîm Han adlı bu eser, Hoca Sâdeddin Efendinin Tâcüt-tevârîhinin I. Selîm devrine ayrılmış son bölümünü oluşturur. El yazmasında, çoğunlukla I. Selîmin askerî seferleri sırasında meydana gelen olayları betimleyen otuz dört tasvir yer alır.

Abstract

The main topic of this paper is an illustrated history of Selîm I produced at the mid. seventeenth century. The manuscript called Târîh-i Sultân Selîm Han constitutes the last part of the Tâcü t-tevârîh, the Crown of Histories , written by Hoca Sâdeddin Efendi. The Târîh-i Sultân Selîm Han includes 34 full-page paintings made probably by the same artist. The illustrations of the manuscript depict events took place during the reign of Selîm I. As a rare example of commercial painting production outside the Ottoman palace workshop, this manuscript gives an invaluable opportunity to discuss the nature of the bazaar painting as well as the past concept of Ottoman city dwellers. Beside it, the iconography of its paintings enables us to examine the impact of the oral literary tradition on shaping visual imaginations of the Ottomans.
