Abstract

Ziya Gökalp wrote an article entitled Tebessüm [Smile] in 1924. Inthis article, Gökalp touched upon not to smile as one of the problems of thesociety, its cultural-historical sources and potential current outcomes. Thisproblem was prevalent amoung the people. In this respect, the writer talked aboutcarrying out a Smile Revolution . This term which has seen interesting at firstglance reflected an anxiety of the most of the Turkish intellectuals of that time, essentially. Smile didn t mean to smile simply. The main intention was toeliminate all negative appearances of the cultural body which the decadence erabrought with and to achieve a cultural revolution upon a value-system whichmade the state and the nation strong and rested upon the affirmation of life. TheSmile Revolution would be both the key and the sign of this culturaltransformation.
