Abstract

The Dardanelles is about 65 kilometers in lenght from the Aegean Sea to the entrance of the Sea of Marmara. Although it is usually considered a single geographical character in archaeological studies, the Dardanelles consists of three different geographical characters. From the historical data, it is understood that the Middle section of the Dardanelles was the most important area in the Early Byzantine Period; but it is prominence was replaced by the upper part of the Dardanelles in the 11th. century. In spite of the availability of historical data, archaeological material is limited. Archaeological material analyzed in this study, namely, an Eucharist bread stamp, a luxurious chafings dish, and the two groups of amphoras can further our understanding öf the area in the Byzantine Period and they can also become important data for the relations between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea regions.
