An Analysis of Coffee Cup Reading as a Discourse Genre: Fortune Telling with Coffee and Ideology

Özet

Kahve falı Türk toplumunda özellikle kadınlar arasında yaygın olan bir sosyal ve kültürel olgudur. Fal söyleminde kullanılan dil, yansıtılan içerik ve ideolojik işlevler açısından çözümlenmesi gereken bir görüntü sergiler. Zira, her ne kadar kahve falının amacı gelecekten haber vermeye yönelik ise de farklı ideolojik işlevler de göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada kahve falı söylemi tür çözümlemesi ve yansıttığı ideoloji açısından incelenmiştir.

Abstract

Fortune-telling with coffee is a social and cultural phenomenon widespread especially among women in Turkish society. Discourse in the act of fortun telling with coffee displays a certain need to be analysed in terms of its content and its discursive functions. Although such a fortune- telling aims to predict future, it exhibits additional ideological functions. In this study, discourse in the fortune-telling with coffee is examined with regard to its genre and the ideology it reflects.
