Abstract

This study examines the relation between child delinquency and a number frequently referred social factors impacting the children at an individual level, including family structure and relations, personal history of working and living on the streets, and substance use. Statistics show that majority of the criminal events that children are involved, are economic in kind, like seizure, robbery, and theft. This study aims to account for why some certain conditions push some children into crime, while not causing the same consequence for others and to determine which social factors, examined within the scope of the study, protect the latter group from being dragged into crime. Setting out from these aims, a questionnaire was applied to two different groups of children, first the child convicts in the Child Education Houses and the children who have similar demographic profile with the first group but who do not have a criminal record. Outcome data of questionnaire survey was examined, comparing the answers of those two groups. Results indicate that rather than those commonly quoted factors, having criminal individuals in family, experiences of working and living on the streets; extent, duration, and frequency of those negative experiences are effective over the risk of children's ending up being criminals.
