Abstract
2,5-Dimethylbenzimidazole as a starting material has been prepared by refluxing 3,4-diaminotoluene with glacial acetic acid in hydrochloric acid for 6 hours according to the Phillips Method. 2-(p-Substitutedstyryl)-5-methylbenzimidazole derivatives have been obtained by refluxing with 2,5-dimethylbenzimidazole and p-substituted arylaldehydes in acetic anhydride for 30 hours. Eight, l-diethylaminomethyl-2-(p-substitutedstyryl) -5-methylbenzimidazole derivatives have been synthesized by the reaction of 2-(4-substitutedstyryl)-5-methylbenzimidazoles with formaldehyde and diethylamine in methanol. All of the compounds synthesized are original and their synthesis have been realized for the first time by us. Antimicrobial activities of the compounds synthesized have been tested against yeast-like fungi such as C. albicans, C. stellatoidea, C. parapsilosis, C. pseudotropicalis, and Gram (+) bacteria such as S. aureus, B. subtilis and Gram (-) bacteria such as E. coli, P. aeruginosa.
