Abstract

The main goal of hospital cost accounting system is to help managers in financial and managerial planning and to provide hospital cost analysts with systematic information on cost. In addition, cost accounting is helpful for cost auditing, planning and decision making in determining the unit costs. To perform the cost-volume-profit analysis, it is required to separate costs first into fixed and variable costs. Fixed costs are regarded as impossible to audit because they are unavoidable. Therefore cost auditing focuses on variable costs. This study provides information on the "cost-volume-profit analysis and break-even point analysis", a basic subject of cost analysis, and examines the degree to which information obtained using this method serves the purposes of cost accounting. At the end of the study, it was proposed that to decrease hospital costs, periodical analysis of income and expenditure should be undertaken and special attention should be given to variable costs.
