Cytophotometric image analysis of smears collected from clinically normal and abnormal mucosa in the floor of the mouth

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı, sitolojik döküntü preparatlarına uygulanan kantitatif teknikler kullanarak ağız tabanı mukozasındaki erken malign değişikliklerin taranmasında sitolojinin teşhisteki hassasiyetini araştırmaktır. Bu çalışmada 82 birey yer almıştır. Bu bireylerden 35 tanesinde skuamöz hücreli karsinom, 27'nde oral liken planus mevcuttur ve geri kalan 20'si sağlıklı bireylerdir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, farklı gruplara ait çekirdek alan değerlerinin karşılaştırılması istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur. Tümöral lezyonlara ait sitoloji örneklerinde çekirdek DNA dağılımını gösteren grafiklerde önemli derecede artan bir farklılık gözlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, sitolojik preparatlara uygulanan kantitatif sitolojinin ağız tabanı mukozasında premalign ve malign lezyon olan hastaların normal ve anormal mukozalarının takibinde faydalı olabileceği bildirilmektedir.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic sensitivity of cytology in the detection of early malignant change in the floor of the mouth using quantitative techniques applied to cytological smears. Eighty-two individuals participated in this study. Thirty-five of these individuals had squamous cell carcinomas, twenty were healthy individuals with no oral lesions and the remaining 27 patients had lesions of oral lichen planus. The results displayed statistically significant variation in the nuclear area values for the different groups of smears. The nuclear DNA distribution histograms for the tumour smears displayed a substantial increase in nuclear DNA-content. It is concluded that quantitative cytology applied to smears could be useful in monitoring normal and abnormal mucosa in patients with precancerous and malignant lesions of the floor of the mouth.
