Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure the shear bond strengths of one bottle adhesives bonded to cervical human dentin. A total of 60 noncarious extracted human molars were randomly divided into 6 groups of 10 each: Gp 1, Single Bond/Valux Plus; Gp 2, Solobond M/Polofil Supra; Gp 3, Admira Bond/Admira; Gp 4, Prime Bond NT/Dyract AP (with etch); Gp 5, Prime Bond NT/Dyract AP (no etch) and Gp 6, Ketac Conditioner/Photac-Fil Quick. Buccal surfaces of mounted teeth were ground flat to expose dentin. Materials, 2.5mm diameter and 4mm length, were bonded to the treated dentin surfaces. Specimens were thermocycled for 200 cycles between 5 and 55oC with a dwell time of 30 s. Shear bond strength was measured with an universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. After failure, the fracture surfaces were examined under a stereo microscope. The mean bond strength in MPa (SD) was: Gp I= 5.02±0.86, Gp 2= 5.22±1.18, Gp 3= 5.99±1.44, Gp 4= 5.67±1.07, Gp 5= 5.86+1.39 and Gp 6= 5.05±0.92. The difference between the means for bond strength was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The fracture mode was mostly adhesive in all groups. It can be concluded that bonding to cervical dentin should be improved because the adhesives tested did not achieve promising bond strengths to cervical dentin.
