Abstract
Dentin bonding agents have undergone a rapid development during the last decade. Yet current resin bonding systems can generally be divided into two categories in terms of simplifi-ed clinical applications. The first category utilizes phosphoric acid etching prior to bonding, while the latter has self-etching priming mechanism. Bonding to intact enamel is still a con-cern with these new systems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the micro-tensi-le bond strength of NRC and Prime&Bond NT, one of the early commercial representatives to such self-etching bonding systems, to unetched primary enamel in conjuction with ult-rastructural examination under SEM. Twenty extracted primary lower second molars were used. After the teeth were randomly assigned to four groups, resto-red teeth were serially sectioned in the transverse direction to obtain 3 or 4 slices each and the bonding interfaces were trimmed to 1 mm2. The samples were then subjected to mic-rotensile test at a cross-head speed of 0.45mm/min after which SEM examination of the surfaces were accompolished. Although the SEM images of intact primary enamel surfaces treated with NRC and Prime&Bond NT were different from the other groups, NRC and Prime&Bond NT group had the lowest bond strength means (17.1 MPa) while there were no statistical differences between the micro-tensile bond strengths of all the grups tested. According to the results of this study, traditional acid etching of primary enamel could still be considered the choice of sur-face pretreatment.
