Abstract
Objective: The objective of this SEM investigation was to compare the enamel surface roughness after stripping with different stripping materials and polishing by means of 3M SofLex discs. Materials and Methods: 16 mandibular first premolars were stripped by one of the following techniques: 1. Diamond coated strip used by hand. 2. Diamond disc used with a slow speed contraangle handpiece and water spray. 3. Serrated diamond disc used with a straight handpiece and water spray. 4. 699 LC tapered fissure crosscut tungsten carbide bur operating in a watercooled highspeed airturbine. The stripped surfaces of eigth teeth were polished by using 3M SofLex discs applied with gradations of coarse to fine. The stripped and polished surfaces were studied by SEM. Results: Smoothest enamel surface was observed after stripping with 699LC tungsten carbide bur. Serrated diamond disc and polishing by means of SofLex discs produced the second best result. Polishing improved the final result after stripping by diamond coated strip. Conclusion: Instruments used for enamel stripping cause different enamel surface roughness. Polishing of the stripped enamel surfaces should be considered according to the stripping technique selected.
