Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determinate the subjective findings of the changes at the maximum mouth opening (MMO) and the functions of masticatory muscles (TAR: right temporalis anterior, TAL: left temporalis anterior, MMR: right masseter, MML: left masseter, SCMR: right sternocieidomastoid, SCML: left sternocieidomastoid) after the surgical extractions of both mandibular and maxillary submerged wisdom teeth. Patients were followed up and the time period they need for returning back to their normal functions were noted. Material and Method: In this study, preoperative measurement values of maximum mouth opening and masticatory muscles activities were compared with the postoperative measurements on day 3, 7 and 30 after the extractions of submerged wisdom teeth from maxilla and mandible. Kinesiograph and EMG (Bio-Pak system, BioResearch Associates, Inc. Milwaukee, USA) were used to determine the maximum mouth opening and masticatory muscles1 functions respectively. Results: For all the muscle groups, the changes related to time, at the preoperative and postoperative third, seventh and thirtieth days, were statistically significant (p
