Abstract
Dentine hypersensitivity has been defined as a short, sharp pain arising from exposed dentin in response to stimuli typically thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic or chemical and which cannot be described to any other form of dental defect or pathology. Two processes are essential for the development of dentin hypersensitivity: dentin must become exposed, through either loss of enamel or gingival recession, and the dentin tubulus must be open to both the oral cavity and the pulp. Treatment can be designed to reduce fluid flow in the tubules and block the nerve response in the pulp. Management strategies, which take into account aetiological and predisposing factors, rather than treatment alone, should be considered. In this review we will discuss the definition, epidemiology, morfology, terminology, mechanism, aetiology, diagnosis and management of dentin hypersensitivity.
