Abstract

Objective: Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) particulates for the surgical augmentation of edentulous alveolar ridge and other bone deficiencies have shown some limitations with respect to the retention of the shape and distribution of the particulate after surgical placement. Organic substances such as collagen, when mixed with the particulate, can offer the opportunity to retain the particulate at the surgical site; improve the placement procedures through the relative ease of manipulation; and influence tissue ingrowth and development characteristics by controlling the interparticulate spaces with a biocompatible material of controlled biodegradation properties. The purpose of the present study is to compare the effects of porous particulate hydroxyapatite with combination of HA-collagen matrix on short term bone healing histopathologically. Material and Methods: 30 Guinea pigs from both sexes were selected and three experimental defects were created on the corpus mandible and filled with hydroxyapatite and combination of hydroxyapatitecollagen matrix. One defect was left empty as control group. The histological examinations were performed on 7th, 14th and 21st days. Results: The results of our experimental study showed all of the tested materials were biocompatible with the soft and hard tissues and aggravated the bone heal-
