Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical performance of a packable resin basedcomposite and a high viscosity GIC following the ART approach under field conditions at the 2 year evaluation period. Material and Methods: A total of 55 school children aged between 7-11 years old that had bilateral matched pairs of occlusal carious permanent first molar teeth were included. A total of 104 ART restorations were placed by using a high viscosity GIC (Fuji IX) and a packable resin composite (Surefil). The restorations were evaluated after 6, 12 and 24 months using USPHS-Ryge criteria. The results were analyzed statistically using Kaplan-Meier and Log-rank tests. Results: The 6 month cumulative survival rate for two restorative materials were 100 % while the 12 month cumulative survival rates of ART restorations in the permanent dentition, were 100 % and 97.7 % for the glass ionomer cement and composite, respectively. The 24 month cumulative survival rates of ART restorations were % 97.7 and % 94.9 for the glass ionomer cement and composite, respectively. There was no statistical significant difference in the clinical performance of the two materials. Conclusions: The clinical performance of both materials over a 2 year period was similar and the survival rates of both materials in class I permanent ART restorations were found to be high.
