Abstract
The main features in a natural tooth that are color, texture, and translucency must be reproduced to provide the patient with an esthetic restoration. The dentist must consider the scientific basis of color. Color is a phenomenon of light or visual perception that permits the differentiation of identical objects. There are three factors upon which color is dependent; the observer, the object and the light source. If any of these three factors change, the perception of the color change, too. Color determination in dentistry can be divided into two categories: visual and instrumental. Visual color determination by comparison of the dental shade guide with a color standard is the most frequently applied method in clinical dentistry for color communication during the fabrication of indirect restoration. Spectrophotometer is a device that can report the color of the teeth in terms of color codes of a predetermined shade guide by collecting the reflected light in all wavelengths of the visible spectra. The three characteristics of color are hue, chroma, and value. To facilitate communication with technicians, the dentist should thoroughly be familiar with these terms and their definitions. This article reviews the factors involved in shade selection for prosthetic teeth and suggests simple techniques for accurately transmitting the information about the desired color to the laboratory technician.
