Abstract

Aim: This study is intended to examine the effect on metal-porcelain bond strength of the addition of 25% and 50% of recast metal to Ni-Cr and Cr-Co nonprecious metal alloys, of chromium and tin plating and of their oxidation at 850oC, 950oC and 1050oC. Material and Methods: In this study, total of 540 samples were prepared from Ni-Cr (Wirron 99) and a Cr-Co (Wirobond C) metal alloy, as containing 100% pure, 25% once-cast recast metal-75% pure, and 50% recast-50% pure metal alloy and they were plated with chromium and tin by electrochemical plating method and all the samples were divided into three groups and oxidized at 850oC, 950oC and 1050oC. After oxidation, porcelain was applied on the midline of the metal alloy samples. The samples were tested in Hounsfield test machine at a cross-head speed of 5mm/min, using three-point bend test. The data were evaluated by using multiple-way analysis of variance. Results: It was determined that the highest metalporcelain bond strength was obtained from Cr-Co non-precious metal alloy, from the metal substructure containing 100% pure metal alloy, from the chromium plating and from the oxidation heat treatment at 950oC. The results showed that the highest bond strength for both Ni-Cr and Cr-Co metal alloys was obtained from the metal substructure containing 100% pure metal alloy which was plated with chromium and applied the oxidation heat treatment at 950oC. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, it is found that the 100% pure metal alloy for both metal alloys is an adequate substructure to obtain strong bonding between porcelain and metal, and that oxidation of non-precious metal alloys containing maximum 50% recasting metal at 950oC after being electroplated with chromium can help provide stronger bonding between porcelain and non-precious metal alloy.
