Abstract
The success of fixed restorations depends mainly on crown retention. Luting cements has no adhesive properties to retain cast crown on prepared tooth structures. Therefore, one has to pay attention to the geometric form of the crown during tooth preparation. Retention prevents removal of a cast restoration along the path of insertion or the long axis of the tooth preparation. Resistance prevents the dislodgment of the restoration by forces directed in an apical or oblique direction and prevents any movement of the restoration under occlusal forces. One of the most important factor in crown retention is the convergence angle between axial walls of the tooth. In order for the restoration to be seated on the prepared tooth these axial walls have to be parallel or slightly tapered. To achieve the maximum retention it is necessary that the convergence angle between axial walls has to be 6 degree or less. It is reported that the increased the angle from 0 to 10 degree will decrease the retention by 50 %. In this research the effect of the convergence angle between axial walls of prepared teeth on crown retention has been investigated. In order to evaluate which angle is most retentive, brass dies with convergence angles of 0°, 5°, 6°, 8°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 35°, 45° have been prepared. 10 crowns were cast for each die. As the result of the tensile test to determine the retention, it was found that as convergence increases the retention decreases. There are no significant differences in retention values among the samples with 6°, 10°, 15° and 20°.
