Abstract
In the study area which contains four different areas in the close neighborhoods of Baskil in the west of Elazığ, the youngest marine unit deposited in Mesosoic is Upper Maastrichtian aged Harami formation. The first marine unit of Tertiary period is Middle-Upper Paleocene-Lower Eocene aged Seske formation. These two units are commonly represented by shallow marine limestones, and Kuşçular formation (Lower Paleocene) is situated between these units. Kuşçular formation with the maximum 585 m thickness is generally represented by claret red conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones and gypsum with lateral-vertical transition to these lithologies which characterized alluvial fan and playa fades. This formation with terrestrial character have been deposited in every respect different conditions of fades from the units situated its bottom and top, and consists of completely different lithofacies associations. The lower and upper contacts of the formation have a discordant straticraphical relationship to the neighbor units, and it is not discussed a lateral and vertical transition between the formation and these units. These terrestrial deposits situated between two marine sequences decument that, during Early Paleocene, the vicinity of Elazığ was the setting for an erosion and the terrestrial depositions place and place, and so, Cretaceous -Tertiary boundary stratigraphically corresponds to an unconformity.
