Abstract

This study comprises an investigation of Gözne reef sedimentologic properties, that outcrops near the Gözne town in Mersin administrative province. The Gözne reef is one of the typical reefs in Karaisalı limestone (Early Miocene). The Karaisali limestone has a lateral and vertical gradational contact with Kaplankaya formation (Burdigalian-Early Langhian) that consists of gravelly sandstone, marl and sandy limestone, but discordantly overlies together with Gildirli Formation (Burdigalian) base conglomerate, Upper Cretaceous radiolarite, serpentine, amphibolite and limestone blocks in the study area. The Gözne reef contains base fades (Gildirli formation, base conglomerate with ophiolite pebbles; wackestone), reef core fades (bindstone-fram.estone; wackestone-packstone-grainstone) and sealing fades (wackestone-packstone). Shallow, warm, clean marine environmental conditions that are required for the reef development, were supplied over the paleotopographical rises after the Early Miocene transgression. The reef core fades with abundant coral, algae and bryozoa started to deposited over the Gildirli Formation base fades with ophiolite pebble. Depends on a sea level fluctuation from time to time wackestone-packstone deposited instead of framestone-bindstone. The sealing fades are formed by broken off and transported reef core fragments and local organism relatively deeper part of the basin among the reef hill or at the top of the reef after the finishing of reef development.
