Abstract

One of the important Neogene basins in the southern Turkey is the Adana Basin. Gildirli formation contains basal conglomerate and fluvial deposits, unconformably overlies the pre-Tertiary units and has a transitional relation with shallow marine deposits of Kaplankaya formations in this basin during the Lower Miocene time. This relation is significantly observed in Soğucak-Bekiralanı villages at the north of Mersin. The Kaplankaya formation unconformably overlies the ophiolitic complex and was ceased by the Gildirli formations elastics without completing their normal development. The deposition starts with red colored gravelly and sandy fluvial deposits and is thinning towards the basin interior and passing into pelecypoda, echinoid, Ostrea bearing and carbonate cemented units (the Kaplankaya Formation). The reef limestone was started to develop again, after the elastics lose their effect and calm down of the environment.
