Abstract

In this study, the dynamic model of an elastic beam sliding through a prizmatic joint which is driven in a three dimensional fixed coordinate system is investigated. The elastic beam having a concentrated end-mass is considered as an Euler-Bernoulli beam undergoing flexural deflections in two planes. Besides, the effects of rotary inertia, gravitation and axial force are taken into consideration. With these assumptions, the differential equations of motion of the elastic beam and the associated boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton's principle. Since it is difficult to find an analytical solution, they are transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations by utilizing the assumed modes method in order to obtain an approximate solution. Some sample mode shapes of the vibrations are presented in plots and the results are discussed.
