Abstract

This article is about to solve lighting requirements of the museums buildings, especially the historical buildings with museum function implemented. The building dealt in this article is "Mahmud Paşa Bedesteni" as one of the most striking exampleof such a kind is restored and used as a museum named "The Museum of Anatolian Civilisations". The "bedesten" consists of a bedesten building, which has two distinct parts: the main "Inner Hall" that is the subject of this article and an encircling "Arasta". The objectives of this study are to solve unsuitable use of artificial lighting which seriously affects both the perception of the space and the objects on display. It was to see how different light sources and different backgrounds might change the perceptions of the exhibits as much as the space. The whole space was modeled in order to be able to compare the present illuminance measurements taken from the building and the measures taken from the proposed artificial lighting parameters in a virtual environment.
