Abstract

This study, involved 40 questions and taken by 43 students in a Private Science Lycee, 8 students in Anatolia Lycee and 30 students in Atatürk Lycee 15 days prior to the university entrance exam in 2002 in Van, aimed to explore the extent ofthose students' basic mathematical topics taught in years 1, 2 and 3 of high schools after the single-phased university exam was put into practice in 1999. In the analyses of the data percentage and frequency were used. This achievement test also involved both taught and untaught topics in years 1, 2 and 3 of high schools. The specifıc aim of the study was to identify whether or not some important but untaught topics that should have been taught in years of 2 and 3 of high schools were known by 3rd students. The study has indicated that students, especially those in the private science lycee, failed to answer those guestions untaught during high school education, but achieved much scores in answering those topics taught during high school education. The findings of this study purport that the sole aim of the students at private schools is to pass university exam. We face this situation as a result of putting single-phased-entrance exam into practice. We (academics) further face with those students at universities who are not aware of limit, integration and turev. As a result, two types of suggestions can be posed; either two-phased-exam must be re-applied, or the university entrance exams must include questions about limit, integral and turev.
