Abstract

Sea baths the name and the function of which we are quite unfamiliar with today can be considered one of the most interesting places of the Ottoman era. The limitations of swimming in the sea(where and how to swim) in the Ottoman era were determined by the goverment due to some anxieties such as the violation of moral values, religious rules , risk of drowning and the pollution of the sea and the beaches. As a result, swimming freely was prohibited and instead of this, small, enclodes swimming pools the floors of which were covered with wooden material were built on the beaches. According to the sources, the number of the sea baths in İstanbul in the middle of the 19 th century was two; it was sixty in late 1900s. Novelists such as Mehmet Celal, Hüseyin Cahit, Hüseyin Rahmi and İzzet Melih used this place element in their novels and attributed different functions to them.
