Abstract
In this study, twenty different kinds of batteries which are in frequent use in Turkey have been left in corrosive medium under different conditions. Their corrosion rates have been determined by weight loss method first and then the corrosion ,rates of some batteries, which are selected by random sampling, have been determined electrochemically. Finally, these samples have been left in the garbage - garbage water, taken from the rubbish dump of Mamak and their corrosion rates have been determined by the weight loss method. When the results were compared, it was observed that the corrosion rates of all the examined waste batteries were high in garbage medium and Cd, Ni and Hg components are mixed with the garbage medium. According to the results obtained, we can say that different waste batteries have threatening effect on human health and environment. Therefore, it is imperative that necessary measures taken to be taken to prevent mixing these wastes from with those in the garbage collector.
