Abstract
In this study, the effects of wood species, number of teeth and feed rate on the surface roughness of massive wood have been investigated. Chosen wood species were Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) which are used in furniture and building (door, window, panelling, floor, ceiling, fishing and sailing boat and poles, etc.). Mitutoyo Sj-301 stylus scanner device is used to measure the surface roughness. Thirty two specimens of the different types of wood were prepared from plunks. Each specimen was cut into 8 equal pieces. Two measurements were performed perpendicular to fibers lengthwise. Sampling length was taken 2,5 mm at a sensitivity level of ± 0,01 $mu m$. The surface roughness of sawn samples was measured according to TS 930. Results indicated that Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) has given the smoothest surface among tested species when sawn with the 40 teeth circular saws.
