Abstract
The designed geometrical compression ratio can be realized as an effective compression ratio at the wide open throttle for a certain engine speed since the effective compression ratio changes with the amount of charge into the cylinder in spark ignition engines. So, this condition of the spark ignition engines force designers to change their geometrical compression ratio according to the amount of charging into the cylinder. In order to improve the combustion efficiency, fuel economy, power output and exhaust emissions at partial loads, compression ratio must be increased; however, under high load and low speed conditions compression ratio must be decreased gradually to prevent probable knock and hard running. In this study, a four-stroke and single cylinder spark ignition engine with constant compression ratio has been converted to an engine with variable compression ratio and the effects of compression ratio variations on engine performance and exhaust emissions has been investigated. In order to change compression ratio, the cylinder was moved up or down. Improvement in engine power and specific fuel consumption were achieved with changing compression ratio from 7:1 to 11:1. Also, at the same compression ratio range carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were reduced, while hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were increased since increasing compression ratio cause larger surface/volume ratio.
