Abstract

The ultrastructure of the epidermis of molerat (Spalax leucodon) has been studied by the transmission electron microscope. In the epidermis, four strata from dermiş towards outside, i.e, stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum and stratum corneum have been discerned. Stratum basale is a single layer of generally columnar and spherical cells lying on the basal. lamina. Numerous desmosomes are found on the membranes of basal cells. The hemidesmosomes are found on the basal plasma membrane and pinocytotic vesicles in cytoplasm near basal surface. Tonofilament bundles (tonofibrils) run in all directions in cytoplasm. Mitochondria, ribosomes and scantly rough endoplasmic reticulum characterize a filament-free perinuclear region of the cells. The cells of stratum spinosum become progressively flattened in a plane parallel with the skin surface. Tonofibrils, mitochondria and ribosomes are the prominent cytoplasmic organelles. The anastomosing tonofilament bundles approach internal face of desmosomes.
