Abstract

This study aims to ascertain the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises based on cognitive-behavioral therapy on the test anxiety of flute students. The study was conducted based on a randomized pretest-posttest control group design, which is a true experimental approach. The study group consists of 1st year undergraduate flute students (N=10) of Division of Music Education, Department of Fine Arts Education, Gazi Faculty of Education, Gazi University in the spring semester of 2018-2019 academic year who has started to play the flute in the 1st year of undergraduate education. In the experiment process which took place in 1 day for 8 weeks, as 45- minute lessons, a flute curriculum based on progressive muscle relaxation exercises was used with theexperimental group; and the traditional flute curriculum was used with the control group. The data were obtained by using the “Individual Instrument Performance Test Anxiety Scale". While analyzing the data, Shapiro-Wilk test results and skewness-kurtosis values of the scores were examined first. After the values for descriptive statistics were determined, the Mann-Whitney U test was employed to compare pretest scores of experimental and control groups before implementation. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was applied in order to identify the score differences between the experiment and control groups' scores before and after the implementation, and the effect size (r) values were examined. Finally, the Mann-Whitney U test was applied for determining the posttest score differences of both groups. As a result of the study, it became evident that flute education based on progressive muscle relaxation exercises affected the test anxiety of the students in the experimental group positively and greatly.
