Abstract
The poetry of Cahit Sıtkı, one of the prominent Turkish poets of the republican period, is studied in this article by taking into consideration two periods remarked by distinctive traits. The metaphysical dimension of his first poems contained in Ömründe Sükut (Silence in My Life), published in 1933, disappears in the poems that compose his book Otuz Beş Yaş (1946, Age of Thirty-Five) as well as his later poems, letting a poetry that remains within the limits of the material life to have the place. This change in the content of the poetry also corresponds to a significant change in Cahit Sıtkı's poetic language. The simple, imaged and personal language of the first period, by being charged with idioms and ready-made expressions, visibly departs from its personal nature in Otuz Beş Yaş and in the later poems.
