Abstract

According to Romain Rolland, the musical novel is a novelistic genre whose essence is feeling in its most general and humanistic form. We find several novelists in Western literature who wrote musical novels, such as Romain Rolland or Gide, Proust, Aragon, Tolstoi and Huxley as well as some Turkish novelists such as Yakup Kadri, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and Enis Batur. Proust’s "A la Recherche du Temps Perdu" can be considered to be the most significant example of this genre, in its elaboration of the sentimental evolution of its characters as well as in its Beethovenian symphonic composition. Several analytical approaches invite us to read this novel in a non-linear way but at the same time permit us to discover through it all the languages of art.
