Abstract

One of the obsession myths in Gide’s narration is Orpheus as well. One of the most important reasons is that young Gide has some difficulties to explain his sexual tendency and personality. He thinks that prutan’s ethic mentality and his family situation in which he is brought up is responsible for his indirect personality and Walter’s death. When he realizes that he has sexual tendency, he decides to kill Emmanuelle and Andre Walter on his own mind. He revolts against every idea which restricts the freedom of individual rights and pushes individuals to do something. He reveals against his sexual tendency, his pleasure and enthusiasm, wishes and ambition, be having just opposite what Andre Walter does. Actually Walter’s death is not an end for Gide. Unlikely it is a beginning for him. It allows the Gide in The Terrestrial Nurtures to emerge. If he didn’t kill Andre Walter, he neither becomes the Gide in The Terrestrial Nurtures nor the Gide in his other studies.Gide who killed Andre Walter on his mind tries to be the spokesman of the mysteries inside the human kind – willingness, ambition and stimulus – in The Terrestrial Nurtures. He presents the Gide who has different moods which are against eachother in Andre Walter’s Notebooks and The Terrestrial Nurtures in order to be himself and intimate like the one in Orpheus myth. In these two studies, Gide writes about Orpheus myth by using the way of individual comments. In order to explain his bad experiences troubles and dilemma, he comments on it again. In these two studies and most of his studies; it is possible to see the effect of Orpheus. However these two studies are distinguished in order to give pre-information about the writer, Gide of Prometheus, Oidipus and Theseus.
