Abstract

German literature in the 17th century most often deals with the destruction and massacres resulting from the 30 Years War. The consequences of the war affected minds at the literary level as much as at the cultural, so that they gave rise to, on the one hand, fatalistic and religious behavior and, on the other hand, enthusiasm for science, liberty and terrestrial things. Adding further to these two orientations, is another view characterized by an awakening of a conscience that is at the same time national and European. This new vision of the world, centered notably around European values, draws its reason of being from the generally accepted ideas fashioned around concepts of the Oreint, the Turk and Islam, in relation to ‘the other’ that is the principal stake at the level of the perception of the otherness that, alone, will measure, it seems, the modes of affirmation of the European identity.
