Andre Malraux's Peregrinations of Indochina

Abstract

André Malraux’s Indochinese adventure started in 1923 with an incredible artistic and commercial expedition. The young man decided to plunder a few archaeological items in the Far-East . He was arrested, judged and condemned by the authorities. A legal and journalistic affair scandal ended up into a memorable. He founded a newspaper called Indochine which soon became the L’Indochine enchaînée in order defend the Annamites and critize the representatives of the French colonial system in Indochina. This fantastic misadventure turned the young adventurer into a more mature man, contributed to give him a political involvement and made him discover the shady side of conservative colonial system against which he was passionately and courageously fighting from that time. On that day, Malraux, the rebel journalist and the man of action, was born.
