Abstract
Jean-Paul Sartre in Being and Nothingness (L'Etre et le Neant) (1943) sets the fundamental principles of Atheistic Existentialism which underline the significance of the acknowledgement of Being and thus of existence. He asserts that one can reach the meaning of essence and freedom of his self through realising his/her very existence on earth. Samuel Beckett's first novel Murphy is the portrayal of a solipsistic character who is in constant search for his se^*through various attempts to find absolute freedom. In this search Murphy perceives his mind and body as two fragmented pieces of his existence. Since Murphy is the representation of a typical modern character who incessantly continues his search for self and freedom, he is pursued by other characters in the novel who seek this ideal position demonstrated in a series of absurdities.
